Changing the infrastructure would cost huge amounts of money, also changing lanes would be rather difficult if part of the car is "inside" the road. To ease the charging of the batteries, the contact surface should be rather large to allow some side-to-side movement of the car. Yet, if the ditches are wide, driving over them would be dangerous.
I didn't do a very good job drawing this, but I would put the car's contacts on a swiveling mount. This would allow quite a bit of side to side motion (maybe up to three feet in either direction. Also, the lanes would be barricaded off. The only reason to bury the contacts at all is so you don't fry every deer that gets the crazy idea to cross an interstate highway. The cost of the road wouldn't be too great. I can't imagine it would cost more than an electric train track. The harder part would be getting everyone to buy cars that are compatible. But then again, that's the big problem with electric cars isn't it? This system would at least make them slightly more appealing.
I just though of two more things. The price of the road could be covered by a toll, as long as that toll was still significantly cheaper than the price of gasoline for the same distance. Also, another incentive for drivers to buy these electric cars would be an increased speed limit in these extra lanes. I'm sure drivers would re-think their car purchases when they saw someone driving 100mph in a special lane and paying a fraction of the price of gasoline. Only real issue I can think of now is how you deal with 100mph accidents in a closed off lane. Maybe make it two lanes and deal with it like they do in HOV lanes.
No physical contact required, and would allow for full vehicle movement. Existing cars could be retrofitted with charging plates.
